Parents Express Concern

The following document was given to Marilyn Brooks, Jim Wussow and Donna Garner of PISD Administration on 8-27-98 and reflects parent concerns about the Connected Math Project and its implementation in PISD. These concerns have been ignored to date (10-13-98).
8-27-98 CONCERNS:

Newness of the program and lack of supporting data. No published studies on CMP’s effectiveness:
CMP co-author Betty Phillips recently sent what she said were two impressive studies on CMP.
Neither had been accepted for publication as of her letter (June 1998). One stated from the outset that since the Standards-based curricula were so newly published, there had been some hesitancy to try them (CMP being one of the curricula referred to).

Representation of TAAS data is selective. The public is given only favorable numbers:
Not all the TAAS data has been favorable, as I point out in my analysis, yet it has been said over and over that the TAAS scores show the strength of the program. We would like to see a more realistic and scientific approach to the test results.

Students take CMP whether they are in Special Ed., Regular, Honors or PACE classes:
The PISD mission statement states that the district will “provide programs which challenge each student to achieve at maximum academic and personal potential.”

Attitude of administrator Jim Wohlgehagen is not consistent with PISD mission, specifically:
“We will model and encourage cooperation and teamwork.”
“We will encourage and be responsive to high community expectations consistent with our mission.”
“We will proactively work with the community to develop and achieve a shared vision.”
In the spirit of this mission, we request that our questions, concerns and real-life experiences associated with CMP be received with the respect and attention they deserve.

Examples of behavior not consistent with PISD mission:
Aug. 3, 1998-- Parent Melissa Johnson was told by Dr. Wohlgehagen that the math group was “hateful” because there was an ad regarding a group meeting that he did not like.
Aug. 4, 1998-- Parent Ronni Jenkins was told by Dr. Wohlgehagen that the ad was hateful and that the math group had “upset the teachers.” He also told Mrs. Jenkins that the June 30 parent meeting was a “set up”-- implying he had been unfairly treated. He pointedly told Mrs. Jenkins after she expressed her disgust with CMP, “Ronni, you have NO data to support your position.”
Aug. 1998 Math team leader’s meeting-- We were told that Dr. Wohlgehagen publicly referred to the math group as “just a religious group”, casting aspersions on both Don Mills and Ronni Jenkins on the basis of religion. He then made a public mockery of Ed Cage, gleefully linking him to his sibling, Ronni Jenkins. Since we were not there, you could only confirm these statements with the secondary math teachers who were in attendance, which we encourage you to do.
Aug. 25, 1998-- Parent Al Kirke was asked by Dr. Wohlgehagen to leave the Haggard parent meeting, which was a violation of his rights as a parent, community member and US citizen. He was also asked to put away the fliers he had produced, as well as a petition he brought to the meeting. These are offenses for which there must be atonement. We wish to work with PISD and its many representatives to “develop and achieve a shared vision.”
